Lift and Transfer (Front & Back or from each Side)

Emergency evacuation and rescue during fire, flood, earthquake, hurricane, tornado, terrorist attack, and other disasters. Provides handles maximizing leverage for two or more people to carry evacuee safely, securely, and comfortably to any other safe location by any means of passage available.

Lifting front and back from shoulders
Needed at each fire escape in multistory buildings! Very few of these facilities or buildings have emergency preparedness or evacuation plans to accommodate the mobility impaired. This has been dramatically demonstrated repeatedly by Hurricane Katrina, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers, and countless fires where mobility impaired individuals have unnecessarily lost their lives! In a fire and other disasters, wheelchair users especially are trapped by deactivated elevators.  Mobility impaired individuals must wait behind while everyone else evacuates to safety for overwhelmed firefighters to arrive and evacuate them - typically with stretchers. This unnecessarily risks the lives of these rescuers.  All too often trapped individuals are overcome by, and die of smoke inhalation, not able to even get down and crawl along the floor below the smoke. This is all completely preventable!

Versatile: When no other alternatives exist, by attaching the 4 handles of the Comfort Carrier to a rope or cable with carabiners, it can be used to lower someone to safety down the exterior of building, a mountainside, or even up into a helicopter.

Post Evacuation Transportation & Care: After initial rescue and evacuation is complete, the Comfort Carrier will make it much easier to place the individual in any available automobile for transportation to a safer location, shelter, or to the nearest hospital if the person is injured.

Shelters, Hospitals, & Temporary Residence: After rescue and evacuation, the Comfort Carrier can be utilized in place of many other specialty devices that may not be available to make otherwise inaccessible hospitals, shelters, or other places of temporary residence usable. It can assist in moving injured and disabled individuals up and down stairs, to a bed, cot, air mattress, or even the ground to and back to a wheelchair.  The Comfort Carrier solves transfer problems from beginning of emergency to the end!  This may often take a week to a month or more before the person this in a stable environment with new wheelchair and permit lift equipment.

 Testimonials

Wayne C. Wurtz, PTA, BS, President, Comprehensive Injury Prevention Solutions, Inc.
"I consult for injury prevention with a human services company.  The Comfort Carrier has caught on recently through my recommendation with this company.  The first one I purchased has been deployed and has been used is a residential setting.  It has helped balance the 2-person head and toe transfer.  It allows for improved lifting mechanics when transferring from the floor, which is typically the hardest place to transfer someone from."

C. A. Thor, Security and Facility Supervisor, Cable One, Inc., Phoenix, AZ
"Mr. Felling... If a man is measured not by what he acquires but by what he gives, then your contribution to helping disabled folks live and work safer and the lives that may be saved thanks to your product are important weights in the balance of your life, my friend.  I hope I can say something like that in my life someday."

Emergency Preparedness - Invaluable when the time comes!
"I was thinking of you this week, In Washington state we had a lot of flooding. Unfortunately I tried to drive through it and stalled out my van and had to be rescued by the fire dept. My son, [Chris] was in the van with me. It damaged his [power]chair. We took a cabulance to a hotel and stayed a few days. Luckily I had Chris's [Comfort Carrier] portable sling with me [to get him out of the vehicle]. (I keep clothes and a small charger in my car in case of bad weather) my daughter was able to come over [to the hotel] and help me transfer him into bed and get him up [with the Comfort Carrier]. I don't know how we would of done it without the [Comfort Carrier] sling. The water has receeded and we are back home now."

Judy Moening, Executive Director, United Cerebral Palsy of Central MN
Mark Felling, an engineer and inventor with quadriplegia, attended our United Cerebral Palsy Adaptive Bike and Recreation Fair in 2006 and demonstrated his Comfort Carrier Transfer Sling. Everyone was impressed with Mark’s professionalism and his desire to solve a significant barrier for people with disabilities and their caregivers -- transferring from one location to another. The Comfort Carrier is easy to use and easy to store, so you can always have it handy. Through his personal trials, Mark has developed a safe solution that we think will be of benefit to many individuals with disabilities as well as care facilities and public businesses. After such disasters as hurricane Katrina, we think the Comfort Carrier should be available in all facilities that house or employ individuals with disabilities or in the homes of people who need to be transferred from wheelchairs.”

Kristin Forster - Hastings, Minnesota, USA
"Thank you so much for creating the Comfort Carrier. We ordered it for my dad just for emergencies like falling out of the wheelchair or equipment failure. By the time we received it in the mail, my dad had all kinds of ideas of where he wanted to go! We have taken him into the house he grew up in, and have a hot-air balloon ride reserved for this fall. My dad is 6 feet tall and over 200 pounds, but my mom and I can easily carry him wherever he wants to go. Maybe we’ll even start to think about a winter vacation someplace warm. J  It’s very easy to use. Nice and sturdy!!  Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!"

Cindy & Jenna Johnson - Woodbury, Minnesota, USA
"We would highly recommend the Comfort Carrier! It is a wonderful design that enables our daughter Jenna to get places she couldn't go before. We use it to get her up the steps to the second floor of our home, but most importantly to Jenna, we use it to get her in and out or our speedboat and into the tube to ride behind it. The Comfort Carrier even made airplane transfers a breeze. Before we had the Comfort Carrier her dad had to do all the lifting....now we can help him too!  And, she feels more comfortable and safer....what could be better than that."

JU and wife CU, Connecticut USA
"I purchased the Comfort Carrier in case of an emergency.  I have fallen out of the wheelchair a few times. Usually I call the police dept. to pick me up and put be back in the chair.  It is somewhat uncomfortable for me and embarrassing. I weigh quit a bit and it is awkward for more than one person to pick me up.  The Comfort Carrier allows more than one person to help and I feel more secure and also less embarrassed. I had a stroke one year ago.  I am 59.  I am unable to walk with paralysis on my right side.  [With the Comfort Carrier] My wife has hopes of us traveling and also taking me fishing. We anticipate situations where a wheelchair might not work. The Comfort Carrier would help in those predicaments."

Evacuation Chairs - why another chair is an inefficient and ineffective alternative to the Comfort Carrier

Evacuation chairs are designed and implemented with good intentions. The first reaction when looking at someone in a wheelchair is a different chair able to go down steps.  However we challenge you to think about a problem more broadly - it is simply to get the person out of the building quickly, safely, and efficiently. Elaborate equipment is unnecessary and only complicates.  Keep it simple!  Evacuation chairs do not address the following issues:
Some evacuation chair's marketing materials claim it can be used by only one person. How do they get the person from their wheelchair into the evacuation chair?  The evacuee must still be lifted by two or more individuals in a rather awkward manner. Also users surveyed did not feel comfortable or confident performing the evacuation without the assistance of another. Many evacuation chairs just have handles to carry the person and chair.  This has a higher center of gravity, is less stable, and consequently less comfortable for the evacuee and those assisting. Watch video Many paraplegics and others able to transfer themselves into the evacuation chair will often choose not to use it, but instead stay in their own wheelchair and just roll slowly from step to step while tilted back with the assistance of one or two individuals.
Evacuation chairs are big and clumsy.  Most cannot be mounted on the wall at the top of the stairwell or fire escape and still pass ADA passageway guidelines which state equipment must not extend more than 4 inches into the passageway. consequently most evacuation chairs get put into a nearby janitor's closet, tucked underneath stairways, and other out-of-the-way locations where they cannot be quickly or obviously located during a real emergency especially when fear and near panic sets in.
Most evacuation chairs must be partially assembled before use.  In most emergencies time is of the essence.
The documentation for many evacuation chairs recommend it should not used when other people are utilizing the stairwell or if there is debris in the stairwell.  Both of which are likely to occur in a real emergency.
Most evacuation chairs cannot be used in narrow stairwells, on exterior fire escapes, nor allow for the person to be lowered down the exterior side of the building if the stairway was blocked by fire or destroyed in an explosion, etc.
Once the person is out of the building, evacuation chairs do not address how to get that person into any available ground or air transportation and away from the area to a safe location such as a shelter, hospital, or temporary residence.
Evacuation chairs do not address the issue of transfers into and out of a cot, temporary wheelchair, etc. until that person is back in a stable environment with permanent lift equipment.
None of the evacuation chairs research included signage to clearly identifying the proper evacuation route.

The Comfort Carrier Evacuation Package addresses and efficiently resolves every one of these issues in a complete solution at 1/4 to 1/2 the cost!
