Computer Accessibility
a sigh be something to think about in the future if you wanted it would be like the third one

Computer Accessibility

Solutions to use a computer quickly and efficiently with complete independence! Methods to move the mouse by pointing and clicking for everyonebrowse the Internet, write e-mails, and play games by simply moving your head or talking to your computer with freedom to come and go and no need for help putting on a headset!  Broadened Horizons is your computer accessibility experts!  This entire web site was created using Dragon NaturallySpeaking with the USB Desktop Noise Canceling Microphone and the No Grip computer mouse.

Many we talk to are using only Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice-recognition software in place of both the mouse and keyboard.  Others are only using an alternative mouse cursor pointing device with an on-screen keyboard.  We highly recommend any computer accessibility solution should include both a point and click method of controlling the mouse cursor and a text input alternate method to keyboarding, typically voice-recognition.  Our solutions are not only the most cost effective in the industry, but combined provide complete independence and almost as quick and efficient use of the computer for someone with no limited or no use of their hands and arms as any able-bodied person.  This is especially important for those going to school or in a competitive work environment!

1) Mouse Cursor Controllers - alternative pointing devices
2) Voice-Recognition Microphones - cut the cord for independence with voice-recognition/voice control
3) Voice-Recognition Software - alternative text input to keyboarding

FAQ - E-Mailed Questions & Responses

Is there any software that would work similar to Dragon Naturally Speaking for a person with CP? We tried Dragon but because of their inconsistent breath and articulation errors it is too time consuming.  Other possibilities to try?

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is the premier computer-based voice recognition application.  There are many other applications and methods of applying voice control all which is essentially a specific command that results in a specific action, but not in free speech dictation.  Free speech dictation Alternatives would be the voice recognition that is built into Windows Vista, IBM ViaVoice which is fairly outdated early competitor to Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and MacSpeech Dictate (formerly iListen, but now upgraded to use the Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice-recognition model).  One possibility that combines voice recognition with typing/word prediction for learning disabilities and some individuals was slurred speech is SpeakQ.

Many other smaller party voice-recognition/voice control applications you can find searching the Internet are based on the Microsoft SAPI voice-recognition models and will get worse performance compared to Windows Vista. Some CP users can learn over time to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking, others cannot.  Of course you could experiment with the voice recognition it built into Windows Vista, but I think the results will be very similar.

Instead a good accessible mouse control method such as those offered above with an on-screen keyboard that has good word completion may be a better route to take such as the free Click-N-Type On-Screen Keyboard.   A new, less conventional, free application in which you "write by pointing" called Dasher might be worth experimenting with.
