Improving Performance of Voice/Speech Recognition Software
1.5 GHz or faster processor
Try creating a new user using the "Medium" vocabulary (35,000 words) rather than the default "Large" general vocabulary (65,000 words). Your personal custom vocabulary words will be added over time either way.
How to Determine if you have enough RAM Memory
Broadened Horizons Voice-Recognition RAM memory recommendations
NaturallySpeaking 7 = 512 MB minimum
NaturallySpeaking 8 = 768 MB minimum
NaturallySpeaking 9 = 1 GB minimum
Windows Vista Speech Recognition = 1.5 GB (1 GB bare minimum)
The quick rule of thumb: If you here lots of hard drive activity, when there shouldn't be, you don't have enough memory. You can confirm this using Task Manager which is built into Windows. To open Task Manager right-click in empty space on taskbar at the bottom of screen and select "Task Manager" from the menu that pops up. Then click on the "Performance" Tab. The performance tab of the task manager has section called Commit Charge found in the very bottom right corner of the window. The Total Commit Charge is a measure how much memory is currenty in use.
The example pictured shows 881 MB Total Commit Charge out of 2,096 MB (2 GB) total physical memory in use. During normal usage of your computer the Committed Charge Total should not exceed 75% of your Total Physical Memory. For example, if it's showing 900 MB in use out of 1096 MB (1 GB) total physical memory, 90% of your available memory is in use and you need to add more RAM memory or close some unnecessary programs that are running.
If the Commit Charge Total is larger than the total amount of physical memory you desperately need to add more RAM memory because you are actively using your hard drive as virtual RAM memory. Windows creates this virtual RAM memory space on your hard drive, also referred to as the page file, to keep the computer running in these situations.
However if the commit charge is less the amount of physical memory you have, it is possible to still have a problem. When the commit limit is near or exceeds the amount of physical memory, Windows will get more aggressive in writing memory pages to the hard drive page file to free up RAM for use by the active process. Normally this is a pretty reasonable algorithm, except that it has undesirable effects when trying to use speech recognition as a primary input device. In this situation, users will often experience "slowness" when resuming speech-recognition after a brief break.
Minimize Startup Programs
AutoRuns is a great tool to see what is being run when Windows starts and is free from Microsoft. Download it, open the zip file, and copy "autoruns.exe to your desktop then double-click to run it. Uninstall any programs you see listed that you no longer use using the "Add Remove Programs" Control Panel. Then uncheck any programs under the following sections which you recognize but do not need running in the background and can simply start up manually when you need to use them. It might be safer to just leave something you do not recognize, although you can always reenable it later. Don't mess with any of the other sections unless you really know what you are doing.

Optimize NaturallySpeaking's Options Settings
Commands tab
Uncheck "Enable mouse motion commands" (if you don't need to use it).
Uncheck "Enable commands in HTML windows" (if you don't use Dragon to surf the Net).
View tab
Check "Anchor".
Miscellaneous tab
You could try different "Speed vs Accuracy" settings depending on the accuracy of your dictation, but the default seems to provide good results.
