Definitions:

IR is abbreviation for Infrared which is a wireless signal based on the invisible infrared spectrum of light. Requires line of sight. Cannot pass through objects.

X10 is a very low-frequency signal that travels over electrical wiring used for environmental control and home automation of electrical devices. Conveniently communicates with plug-in modules or light switches. Inexpensive and most common, but more prone to interference from electrically noisy appliances.

UPB is a very high frequency signal similar to X10 but more expensive, newer technology with greater range, and eliminates interference problems.
