Smartnav Details

The SmartNav Head Control Mouse is both the fastest system on the market and the most adaptable to the users needs.

Speed: The cursor position is updated at a blazing 120 samples per second, resulting in precise cursor placement with real time response.

Resolution: A high resolution imager allows for pixel accurate pointing and control that feels like a laser pointer. More accurate then most desktop mice!

Lighting conditions: Sunlight resistance and tracking technology allow the system to be used in almost any lighting environment, sunlight is not a problem.

Powerful Software: Allows for full configuration and adaptability of the device.

How It Works

Uses an infra-red(IR) camera to track your head movements. You reflect infrared light back to the camera, which sends instructions to your computer to move your mouse cursor.

Place the Dot

Tracks reflections from a tiny dot, which you can place anywhere: Head, Hand, Hat, Glasses, Mic Boom. Alternatives to the dot sticker are also available. The Head Control Mouse can image any IR source; typically this is reflective material or an active IR source such as an LED. A user may track many different objects by placing reflective dots or LEDs on the object.

Where do I put the SmartNav Head Control Mouse IR tracking camera?

The Head Control Mouse camera usuall sits on top of your monitor, facing you. But you can clip it to laptops or place it behind you. It can be placed anywhere as long as it can see whichever reflective accessory you've chosen to wear.

How much do I Move?

Less than an inch of head movement is more than enough to move the cursor across your entire screen. This is also adjustable in the software's "speed" settings. The Head Control Mouse has a 30 degree Field Of View (FOV), and usuall sits about 2 feet away from your head. Thus you have at least a foot and a half of free "head space" in which to move that simple inch.

How do I click?

For those only able to move their head, one of the sip and puff packages is highly recommended for the best, most responsive and efficient control of all mouse functions such as double-click, right-click, dragging, etc. For those able to move a hand slightly or maybe just a finger, the two USB mouse buttons will work nicely. As a lower-cost totally hands-free alternative to sip and puff, or just for relaxing Web browsing, 3 different 'Click Assist' software programs are included plus 2 trials. Select the one that works best for you! Alternatively, free software is also included to click by voice control! Hot Keys on the keyboard may also be used. For those who find typing difficult, an on-screen keyboard with word completion is included as well as voice recognition software with basic dictation! See what's included below.

Technical Details

Infrared light is emitted from the LEDs and is reflected back to the imager by a corner cube reflector (3M safety material). This reflected light is imaged by a CMOS sensor and the video signal is passed to the preprocessing electronics. The video signal is thresholded against a reference level and all passing data is sent to the USB microcontroller to send to the PC for object tracking. In order to increase the signal to noise ratio an IR filter that passes only 800nm and above is placed between the imager lens and the outside world.
