This Electric Powered Prehension Orthosis (EPPO) Wrist-Hand Orthosis, commonly referred to as a wrist splint can be utilized by those who lack hand grasp and sufficient tenodesis-enabling wrist extension strength. The PowerGrip is indispensable for providing the ability to pickup, grasp, hold, and manipulate objects.
Who would the PowerGrip benefit?
Anyone unable to pickup or grasp objects and more specifically with wrist extension strength of 0-3 (on 0-5 muscle grading scale) and little or no finger flexion. Typical pathologies include:
C-4, C-5, and some C-6 level Quadriplegics (spinal cord injury)
Polio, stroke, ALS, brachial plexus injuries, muscle disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and others
For those also lacking sufficient shoulder or bicep strength to touch their hand to their chin, the new JAECO Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton is a perfect complement to the PowerGrip Assisted Grasp Orthosis
What can the PowerGrip help you do?
Eating with normal utensils and drinking from a can, bottle, or glass
Enjoying a sandwich or apple without having to cut it up and other finger or snack foods, even chips with dip!
Shaving, brushing teeth, combing hair, or even putting on makeup
Opening doors, drawers, window blinds, etc.
Shredding secure, private documents
Writing, drawing, painting, engraving, soldering, wood burning, etc.
Picking up anything from a book to a business card
Putting on and adjusting a baseball cap, eyeglasses, or sunglasses - even makes scratching an inch more effective
Pressing buttons on anything such as a telephone, remote control, security keypad for door opener, or even hand controls.
Features
Full Insurance Coverage: Existing Medicare/Medicaid insurance code simplifies acquisition and reimbursement process with most insurers!
L3904- WHFO, External Powered, Electorate, Custom-Fabricated.
Functional Independence: Just the right amount of pressure and speed to provide good function without damaging fingers that lack sensation*. Infinite finger positioning with no detents, such as with a ratchet splint, so objects grasped do not slip out of hand.
Ease of Use: To grip an object, intuitively hold button to close fingers until actuator stops running.
Versatile Control: Accepts any two standard adaptive switches, even an EMG muscle sensing
Convenient to Wear: Lightweight power actuator mounts directly to splint for an ease to don/doff. Only one wire easily routed through users shirt sleeve.
Durable: Resulting from 3 years of real-world use by the developer!
Easily Maintained: Primary components subject to wear or damage (wire & plugs) can be quickly and inexpensively replaced within a few minutes for only a few dollars from most electronics retailers!
Cognitive Muscle Control: New Myoelectric Switch Control now available! Myoelectric sensors placed on one or two functional muscles replace switch control. Upgradable with future Myoelectric controls based on prosthetic hand technology currently under development.
Many more subtle detail improvements address reliability and maintainability as well as control and usability concerns of similar products (no longer available) from other suppliers of the past.
How to Obtain
1. Physician or Occupational Therapist identifies appropriate clients whom PowerGrip will benefit, writing prescription and/or letter of medical necessity if necessary. Therapist helps client choose most appropriate adaptive switches for open/close control (see options).
2. Orthotist (find an orthotist near you) orders kit from Becker Oregon, JAECO Orthopedics, or Broadened Horizons. Splint is fabricated to supplied client measurements or mold. Orthotist performs final fitting of splint to client, and bills insurance. (In areas where a local orthotist may not be available, therapists have successfully performed final fitting and insurance billing.)
3. Occupational Therapist often sees client for training, mounting/positioning switches on wheelchair if not performed by orthotist, adapting eating utensils if necessary, other ADL goals, etc.
Requires fitting of splint by a Orthotist
(or in some cases an experienced therapist)
Kit can be mounted to most available ratchet or tenodesis based wrist-hand orthosis systems by an experienced Orthotist. Different orthotist's often have preferences for one system or another using either aluminum or plastics. If you, your therapist, or your orthotist have any questions or concerns, or to place an order, please Contact Us to discuss your specific needs.

Message from Mark Felling, President to prospective users
I use this solution all day long, every day since 2004, to the point I feel paralyzed once again without it. Some users plan to only wear it for eating or certain activities such as arts & crafts, sometimes because of concerns about cosmetics. The first few days it may look peculiar on your hand, but the positive reactions and fascination by others as you do things you've never done before will far outweigh any of your previous reservations! You will begin noticing significant strength and endurance improvements simply through functional use of your arm often within one week! Months and even years later, I continue to discover things (usually driven by necessity when help is not available) that I'm able to do which I never thought try, or better ways to do them. Even simple tasks like pressing buttons becomes much easier. Your occupational therapist can assist greatly in these discoveries!
