Quick Overview

The ultimate and ideal completely accessible escape to Mexico! Because accessibility and wheelchair-friendly is much more than facilities - it is people who understand providingservices that make it possible, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Four Star Wheelchair Accessible Hotel / Restaurant / Bar / Palapa / Beach Resort on 2.2 Acres

Built by by my friend, the late Quadriplegic American Veteran William Bussier and currently operated by his wonderful wife and son William II (also a wheelchair user from spina bifida), Freedom Shores is a gem for the disability community unparalleled anywhere in the world!  My visit in 2009 was the best travel experience I have had since breaking my neck in 2003!  My father traveled with me and absolutely loved it, (especially the fact he did not have to help me!) and is still planning to go back with my mother.

- Mark Felling, Broadened Horizons President

William Bussier, Sr. & His WifeTo people with disabilities, travel can be dangerous and a challenge, and yet we yearnfor those adventures, the opportunity to be with our families and friends in new and exciting locales; to experience the richness of new cultures together and to build a tapestry of memories that surround us with their warmth when we go home.

Those yearnings drove Bill & Thelma to create a unique beach accessible Four-Star Resort in the little fishing village of Isla Aguada, Campeche on the Gulf side of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

No stranger to Mexico, Bill, a quadriplegic from a diving accident on Nov 3, 1961 while serving in the  Marine Corps, lived in Cuernavaca, Mexico for several years where he met & married his beautiful wife of 48 years, Thelma.

They always dreamed of opening a place where those in wheelchairs  could vacation, alone or with their families, in comfort in a resort which met all of their needs and with activities in which everyone could participate.

That dream came true for them….now, let us make it come true for you!

Map of the Yucatán Peninsula"Fully Inclusive Geotourism"
Nestled in the southeast of Mexico, lies an exquisite beach resort that is focused on creating a personalized vacationing experience that meets all of your needs. This tropical getaway is located on the historic Yucatan Peninsula, surrounded by the tranquil blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, where a greatMayan culture once flourished among dense tropical jungle.

This intimate, full service beach resort on 2.2 acres features nine Universally Designed furnished rooms with breathtaking ocean or garden views. There are flat, smoothly paved sidewalks everywhere!

This resort is small and personal and each hotel room is only a few seconds from the restaurant, the palapa and the tropical beach. Come, enjoy the amenities and services of the hotel, delight in the flavors of our cuisine, the richness of our Mayan culture, and the natural reserves that surround us. Paradise awaits you!

Voted the best beach on the bay, locals flock to Freedom Shores' custom-built Palapa with a cool breeze overlooking the water and beautiful white sand beach which is groomed daily. Enjoy the sun or relax in the shade of a palm tree, and when you are hungry or thirsty the best food or drinks are brought to you in minutes!

The peaceful resort features nine universally designed intimate guest rooms featuring everything you might expect in a luxurious hotel, Mexican tile floors, large ceramic tile bathrooms, wheel-in showers, dark tropical hardwood cabinets, air conditioning, ceiling fans, high speed wireless internet, all with a contemporary Mexican flavor.

The Four Star restaurant is a place you will look forward to everyday because the chefs are masters at their craft! Once they get to know you, they will delight you by preparing your favorite dishes.

We have a gigantic palapa down by the beach and many of our guests prefer to take their meals there. Sitting under the palapa and enjoying a drink while watching the dolphins jump every morning and every evening or our breathtaking sunset is a tradition.

Mayan Ruins in the state of Campeche

We have a new, chauffeured driven/ tour guided air-conditioned E-250 Ford van, with multiple tiedowns that is equipped with a 600 lbs. capacity wheelchair lift.
It is available for rent for $250.00 per day.

Some of the trips to the Mayan ruins are multiple day trips and you must make reservations at least two weeks in advance. This gives us an opportunity to make your reservations at the hotels located near the sites.

Calakmul had a population that may have reached 60,000! Archaeologists have found remains of more than 6, 500 buildings! It competed for hundreds of years with neighboring Tikal (in Guatemala) for domination of the Mayan empire. They had friendly relations and they had fierce battles! It is located only about 30 km from the border with Guatemala on a road that they recently paved.

See Edzna, a city that formally had 50,000 inhabitants!

Balamku (in Mayan means Jaguar Temple) wasn't really noticed until 1990!

Becan was a large city surrounded by a moat!  Check out why!

The Mayan translation of Chicanna is: Serpent Mouth House

At Dzibilnocac you can witness the imposing Chenes Mayan architectural style.

in the Mayan language,Hochob means "a place where corn is stored."

The ruins of Xpuhil were named after a nearby water supply. The word in Mayan is in reference to a herb known as "cola de gato" (cat's tail).

Located near the modern-day capital of Campeche, the ancient city of Edzna , which in Mayan means "House of the Grimaces" is a definite must-see! This is a very beautiful and large complex which even features some parts of the city with a moat around them!  This is indeed one of Campeche's gems!

Room PicturesIn this section you can see how large and roomy the rooms are at Freedom Shores. The rooms are large enough so that two wheelchairs have room to maneuver comfortably. Some of the pictures show the lavatory that is located inside the room. Notice that the faucet is located at the three o'clock position on the sink and the faucets are located at four o'clock and at eight o'clock. This makes it extremely easy for quadriplegics to use the sink.

Local AttractionsHere you can see pictures that were taken on Bird Island about five minutes from Freedom Shores. There are also pictures taken in the city of Campeche. We also have pictures of birds, because at Isla Aguada there are thousands and thousands of birds! We have also included some pictures of the local Mayan people. They are so kind and gentle.

Beach Front PicsThe palm tree fronds gently sway as they dance in the breeze coming off of the lagoon. You lie in your hammock and watch the fishermen in boats heading out into the Gulf for another day of fishing. A pelican flies by with one eye on you and the other eye on the water looking for fish. Your eyes slowly close and you think to yourself, "This must be paradise!"

Accessibility PicsFrom the very beginning you had your doubts about whether the claims made by those at Freedom Shores stating that it was totally accessible where true. When you arrived, the first thing you wanted to see was not the beach, it was the bathrooms! You remember the smile that came on your face when you realized what they had been telling you was true!

Deck BoatOn November 19, 2007, Emery and Mary Horvatin from Riverside, California arrived at Freedom Shores. It was a momentous occasion. Emory Horvatin was the first wheelchair client to stay at the resort! The pictures you see were taken when I took Emery and Mary on a fast boat trip across the Laguna de Terminos to a mangrove preserve. We went up a river that is about a mile long. As we traveled, the mangroves began to close in on us! We had a Mexican biologist along who explained to us how these magnificent trees are able to survive in salt and fresh water. On our return trip across the lagoon, we stopped at Seashell Island so the ladies could collect some beautiful shells. We got back to the island just as the sun was setting. I hope you enjoy the photographs.

Sunrise, SunsetsIf you get up early and you go out to the beach and look eastward, you will witness one of the most glorious sunrises you have ever seen! Then, in the afternoon, as you notice all the birds headed towards Bird Island, your eyes move west and you notice the sun set. Every few minutes its beauty changes as the sun's rays paint the clouds from different angles and with different colors. In this tranquil moment you realize... How great Thou art!

You may choose to enjoy your meals in the privacy of your room, on the beach, al fresco on the boardwalk, at the palapa, or in the dining room. Egrets, stilts, pelicans, seagulls, and a cornucopia of migratory birds will entertain you for hours!
