Q: My HP or Compaq notebook shows this message: "This adapter doesn't provide enough power" Is this a problem?

A: This message is no reason to worry. HP or Compaq notebooks give this standard warning when any 3rd party adapter is used. The Trust power adapter will work just fine in this case. Only in some rare cases the notebook really does not charge. In this case, please contact Trust customer care for a solution.

How much power does your notebook need?

The notebook power adapter must be able to supply sufficient power to the notebook. Power is specified in number of Watts (W), e.g. 65Wcall 90W, or 120W.

Important: always use a notebook power adapter that has equal or higher power output than the notebook requires. E.g., on a 90W notebook you can use a 90W or 120W adapter but not a 70W adapter.

Follow these steps:

  • The power requirements are usually specified in Watts (W) on the original power adapter that was included with your notebook. See figure 1 (P). Common power outputs are 65W and 90W.

  • When the output power is only specified in Volts (V) and Amperes (A), multiply those numbers to get the power output in Watts (W). In figure 1, the output power is: 18.5V x 3.5A = 64.75W (rounded off to 65W).

  • If the original adapter is missing then check for a label on the notebook, check the user manual or contact the manufacturer of the notebook.

Solving problems

The power adapter gets a bit warm or makes low volume noise.
This is normal for a power adapter.
Put the adapter on the ground under your desk/table with sufficient ventilation.
My laptop is not being charged or powered by the adapter.
  • Make sure you have set the correct voltage as described in the manual.  (disconnect laptop first!)
  • Make sure you are using the correct connector with our tip selector.
  • Press the tip connector firmly into the notebook.
  • With the C-tip (for HP and Asus), a clear click sound should be heard when connecting to notebook!

Note: If still not working after this: request the latest updated connector for your notebook on our spare parts request page.
