Sexuality & Disability

This is a section we are considering. Sexuality is a part of all of our lives and we have seen the disability community has just as much need for greater independence in this area. I would like to hear your thoughts if you would like to see us create innovative solutions in this area?

The Sexual Health Network Disabilities section is an excellent resource. Operated by Dr. Mitchell Tepper, himself a paraplegic, the site offers unique insights.

Sex Habilidad is and EXCELLENT resource. (Spanish-language with translation)

The Ferticare Personal Vibrator is the most common device for sexual dysfunction in SCI men ($550-$850 by prescription only).  High frequency pulsatile motion adjustable from 70 Hz to 110 Hz (approximately equivalent to 4200 rpm-6600 rpm) and adjustable amplitude are it is claimed keys to success. Ferticare User Manual. In his article "When Your Vibrator Lets You down" Brad, an enthusiastic Canadian Ferticare user, and athletic Quadriplegic mountain climber who has studied his own body's reaction autonomic dysreflexia under extreme exercise, also under the guidance of iCord research, apparently feels he obtains additional benefits and has souped up his to vary frequency and amplitude based on his heart rate and blood pressure!

According to the Pleasure Able Sexual Device Manual for Persons with Disabilities [READ THIS] by Dr. Elliot at iCord Canadian Rehabilitative Research Center at B.C. Institute of Technology, the Hitachi Magic Wand Massager (5000 or 6000 rpm, $45 Amazon) and Wahl Therapeutic Massager (? rpm, $19.95 Amazon) are often effective for many, far less expensive, and available without a prescription.  The Trinity 7-Speed Wand Massager from Healthy & Active (3000-7000 RPM, $29.95) looks to be a Hitachi knockoff but importantly offering both a slightly higher and lower frequency (Caution: not great reviews on Amazon).  Article: Vibrator helps people with spinal cord injuries

Canadian 'Sexpert' Interview with Brad , C5 Quad and Mountain Climber (see Recreation-Climbing) by Maureen McGrath on CKNW Sunday Night Sex Show, Sundays at 8pm - 9pm

Brad: "I think I’m the worst person to ask about dating in Vancouver. I think she missed my dragon boat joke, quads certainly do not go dragon boating to “meet chicks”, just doesn’t happen. So, if you’re at a party, and everyone is smart, funny and good looking… if you’re on wheels, well chances are you’re probably not getting laid that night (happens, but less often). It’s common to be “in the friend zone” (by Tiffiny Carlson), or to assume this is the case (which is even worse). In the radio show I ask, just which date do you start explaining the limitations and details of getting it on with a wheeler. How much information do they need for it to be comfortable and safe? Is this a turn off, or is it interesting to try something different?"
