Personalized 1-on-1 training and setup support from a Broadened Horizons assistive technology professional to help you get your new equipment setup and operating faster, easier, with better results, and less frustration. 

We consider the unique specifics of:

  • your environment and room layout
  • devices you wish to control
  • your abilities, knowledge, and past experience


With personal attention over the phone, we are able to hear problems as they occur and provide immediate feedback and coaching help you improve the quality of your voice command recordings, and timing of your voice commands as you learn to use the technology. For specific or unique goals, we are able to suggest advanced tips and techniques.

For our international customers, we offer the same level of top quality training and support services utilizing Skype.

IMPORTANT: Training is performed directly with the assistive technology end-user.  A family member, friend, or aide will be needed to push buttons.  This helper does not need any special knowledge or experience, only patience and the ability to follow specific instructions.    A general technical aptitude is helpful.

IMPORTANT TRAINING NOTE REGARDING DEMONSTRATION & LOAN EQUIPMENT

For the VoiceIR Environmental Voice Controller and Vocalize Wheelchair Bluetooth Cell Phone Voice Control System, Broadened Horizons 1 hour training and setup support service is very strongly recommended.  If you get a loan of equipment, 1 hour training and setup support can be purchased from Broadened Horizons directly.  Of course if you decide to purchase the equipment, there should be no need to purchase this training service again unless too much time has passed and you have forgotten. Of course, this is not necessary if the partner has staff who participated in Broadened Horizons training and have sufficient experience and familiarity with the equipment AND will perform such training service.

-----------------------Recommendations------------------------------

Training can be purchased in hourly increments. 

We strongly encourage you to READ the user manual we wrote and provided prior to training.  We wrote it to help you!  Electronic PDF version can be downloaded from product page or is available on request.  Reading the manual will make things go faster, easier and more smoothly and utilize your training time most effectively.  Any time not utilized during the first session can be used later for adding a new device, review of advanced features, etc.

VoiceIR: 

  • Minimum 1 hour covering keyword selection, training basic, sequential, and macro commands for TV control
  • Add minimum 30 minutes or 1 hour for each additional device depending on its complexity:
    • +15-30 minutes - Satellite/Digital Cable
    • +30-45 Minutes - X10 Independence Package
    • +1 Hour - The Core
    • +1 Hour - TalkIR Pro Speakerphone with Voice Dialing
    • +30 minutes X10 Bed Controller (if already using other X10 controls) or +1 hour if using X10 for the first time
    • +30 minutes for thermostats, ceiling fan and lighting controls,

Vocalize - 1 hour training is usually sufficient IF before:

  • You have read the Vocalize user manual completely.  Review the section in your phone's user manual on pairing it with a Bluetooth device.
  • Spread the Vocalize components out on a table and observe how they plugged together.
  • We would be happy to help you learn to use your cell phone, but this can easily require 1 or more additional hours training and we are not familiar with every phone and model but will do our best.  To save you money, we recommend contacting your service provider for support on issues of your phone handset has that support is part of your contract.  Vocalize does not require a smart phone with a data plan.
    • Be sure your mobile handset is able to make calls and you know how to use it.  If your phone has built-in voice dialing (recommended for ease-of-use), add a few contacts and be sure you know how to voice dial on the handset as able-bodied person would not using the Vocalize system.
    • Training covers using the Vocalize system with your cell phone. Installing and configuring special applications on your cell phone is outside the scope of this training (i.e. iPhone, Android, Blackberry).  If you would like our assistance installing and configuring applications on smart phones, be sure to budget for a minimum of 1 hour additional training, and working up problems or conflicts can often take more time.
    • If your technical expertise is lower, and you are not comfortable installing new apps or reconfiguring your phone, consider sticking with the default configuration or you might want to consider a simpler "feature phone".
