Cuidad del Carmen y Isla-Aguada

Freedom Shores - Broadened Horizons first recommendation! The ultimate in accessibility designed by a quadriplegic.  Complete with portable ceiling lifts, ground transportation in a full-size van with wheelchair lift, free beach wheelchair, wheelchair accessible pontoon boat, Mayan tours and city of Campeche History Tour, and more.  Direct flight from Houston to  Cuidad del Carmen.

Cancun is a very popular tourist destination with easy direct flights from many airports throughout the United States year-round.  This simplifies getting there, especially using the Comfort Carrier for aircraft transfers.  However, as with most destinations, one of the biggest problems is how you get around once you arrive  and access other tourist attractions?  There are now 2 services available to assist you with all of your Cancun needs, unfortunately even with a bit of competition, ground transportation remains quite expensive if you are unable to transfer from a wheelchair and require a van with a ramp. Plan to spend $60-$100 for a short trip and just under $300 for a full day. Both of the following services use a large full-size van with a Roll-a-Ramp.  Since the floor is not lowered, headroom can be a little tight though I am 5'11" and managed in a power wheelchair.  If your chair has a high seat height (above 19" to the panyour cushion rests on) or you are significantly taller than me, plan to recline or be a bit uncomfortable.

If you are able to transfer, even using the Comfort Carrier, things will be much less expensive and go off without a hitch. Mexicans will be very willing to help you, even lift you from your wheelchair into a regular Van and put your wheelchair in the back like luggage.  In this way you can utilize standard services or even a free service packaged with your hotel (be sure to ask when making reservations as this can save you significantly).

Adapta - I spoke to them over the phone and they seem quite knowledgeable, have a staff person dedicated to advocacy with the local resort community, are able to set you up with hotel, transportation, tours, and rental of some equipment such as beach chairs

Cancun Accesible - I met with Judith one evening in early May, 2007.  Able to recommend hotels, provide airport transfer ground transportation but focused on tours.

ForHandicapTravelers - I am not familiar with this service but prices are conveniently published on website and look consistent with others
